Computer Maintenance

You know, when you purchase a new car, the dealership always informs you when routine maintence is required on your vehicle. This usually involves oil changes every 3,000 miles or so and scheduled maintenance at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles, for example.

Computer manufacturers, on the other hand, don't usually provide computer maintenance information to consumers. So, buyers are left to find out this information for themselves. Often, they learn the hard way as the hard drive crashes and the "blue screen of death" appears. So, it can be expensive not to do routine computer maintenance.

Computer Maintenance 1: Defragmenting the hard drive - This is one of the basic computer maintenance functions that should be performed regularly on computers. To run this program in Windows XP, for example, click Start in the lower left hand corner of your desktop, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Then just run the disk defragmenter until it finishes.

Computer Maintenance 2: Disk Cleanup - This program removes temporary files and files in the recycle bin from your computer. Again in Windows XP, click Start in the lower left hand corner of your desktop, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Then just select the hard drive you wish to clean up and follow the directions.

Computer Maintenance 3: Create Backups - A good computer maintenance tip is to create backups for anything that you can't afford to lose. This would include word processing documents, spreadsheets, photos, and presentation graphics. Small files can be backed up using a floppy drive. For larger files, especially those with a lot of pictures, can be backed up on a CD/RW drive or DVD/RW. Files can also be backed up on a small flash drive.

Computer Maintenance 4: Eliminate Old Files - Go to my documents and delete old files that you no longer want and need. These include word processing documents, spreadsheets and any other documents that are not wanted or needed. You should do the same thing for pictures, under My Pictures. Remember to delete these files again from the Recycle Bin.

Other Computer Maintenance 5: - There are a number of other programs that are available commercially that will help with computer system maintenance. They perform functions such as remove spyware, clean your registry file and delete shortcuts that no longer work. There is also software that improves the speed and perfomance of your computer. I've provided a few links throughout this blog about them.

Computer Maintenance 6 : Clear Disk Cache - This is a computer maintenance function that you should do monthly, or when you notice a slowdown in response time.
If you use Netscape: Open your Netscape browser (either online or offline), then go to Edit + Preferences. Click on the + next to Advanced, then click on Cache. Press button labeled Clear Disk Cache. If you use Internet Explorer: Open your IE browser. Go to Tools then Internet Options. Under the Temporary Internet Files section, click on the Delete Files button. Do not check the box to Delete all offline content. Click the ok button. Under the History section, click on the Clear History button.
